Chicago—A new report released today by the International Aluminium Institute confirms what fabricators and end-users have been whispering for months: industrial aluminum profiles are rapidly replacing carbon-steel framing on cost, performance and carbon grounds. The study, based on 2024 shipment data from 42 extrusion plants on four continents, shows demand for 6xxx-series structural profiles growing 9.4 % year-on-year, while demand for equivalent steel sections contracted 3.1 %.

Weight savings of 60–65 % translate directly into freight and handling reductions. A typical 40-foot container now carries 18 t of aluminum framing versus 11 t of steel, cutting per-unit logistics costs by US$0.38 per kilogram on the Asia–EU route.

Corrosion resistance slashes lifetime maintenance. Salt-fog testing shows anodized 6063-T5 profiles retain >95 % of yield strength after 1,000 hours, whereas painted mild-steel samples lost 30 % of strength and showed visible rust within 200 hours.

Modular design cuts assembly time. Snap-fit T-slot systems reduce on-site labor by 47 % compared with welded steel, according to a Siemens Digital Industries case study on EV battery-pack conveyors.

Circularity is becoming a commercial advantage. Profiles containing ≥75 % post-consumer scrap command a US$120/t premium in Europe as OEMs race to meet CSRD reporting deadlines.
Market reaction
“Aluminum extrusions have moved from niche to norm,” says Erik Johansson, purchasing director at Sweden’s Northvolt. “We now specify 80 × 80 mm aluminum frames for every new gigafactory line because they install three times faster and cut embodied CO₂ by 1.2 kg per meter.”
Capacity expansion
Responding to the surge, Hydro Extrusions announced a US$180 million investment to add 50,000 tpy of high-strength 6005A capacity at its Székesfehérvár plant by Q3 2026. Meanwhile, China’s Goomax Group is installing Europe’s first AI-guided inline quench system, promising ±0.1 mm straightness on 7 m bars—tight enough for robotic pick-and-place without secondary machining.
Outlook
Grand View Research projects the global industrial aluminum-profile market will reach US$89 billion by 2030, driven by automation, renewable-energy racking and lightweight construction. “Every kilogram of aluminum replacing steel in framing saves 9 kg of CO₂ over a 20-year service life,” notes IAI chief economist Chris Bayliss. “That equation is simply too compelling to ignore.”
